The Birds

Sweet Lamb is known for high pheasant and partridge shooting in Wales, with the character and quality of the birds shaped by the remarkable terrain of the Cambrian Mountains.

A carefully managed mix of pheasant and partridge is presented across the estate, but it is the manner of their flight that sets them apart. Driven over deep valleys, across rising ground and along the natural contours of the hills, the birds are influenced as much by the landscape as they are by the way in which each drive is planned.

Height comes naturally here. Birds lift over ridgelines, appear unexpectedly from behind rising ground and travel with pace and purpose across open sky. When the wind joins in, it adds another dimension, bringing movement, variation and unpredictability to the drive.

The intention is to present honest, testing and rewarding birds. For the experienced Gun, Sweet Lamb offers the opportunity to take on birds that require commitment and good judgement, while those developing their shooting have the chance to learn in an environment where every drive offers something different.

Careful attention is given to achieving balance across the line so that each peg has its opportunities and challenges. The emphasis is always on the quality and presentation of the birds rather than numbers alone, because the birds that stay in the memory are not necessarily those that end up in the bag.
